1 The South Africa / Italy tie was delayed from September 22 due to scheduling conflicts; Italy had announced in August that they would not travel to South Africa, and South Africa had refused Italy's request to play the match in Rome.[2]

Final

The final was scratched and South Africa was awarded the Davis Cup after India refused to travel to South Africa for the final in protest of the South African government's apartheid policies.
