The 1989 Big Sky Conference Men's Basketball Tournament was held March 9–11 at the BSU Pavilion at Boise State University in Boise, Idaho.[1]
Second-seeded Idaho defeated the defending champions, top-seeded Boise State, in the championship game, 59–52, to take home their third Big Sky men's basketball tournament.
The Vandals, in turn, received an automatic bid to the 1989 NCAA Tournament. No other Big Sky members were invited to the tournament.
Format
No new teams were added to the Big Sky prior to the 1988–89 season, leaving total membership at nine.
Nonetheless, the tournament field was decreased from eight to six. With teams ranked based on regular season conference records, only the top six teams were invited to the tournament. The two top seeds were given byes into the semifinals while the third- through sixth-seeded teams were placed and paired into the preliminary quarterfinal round.
