Martina Hingis was the defending champion, but she was defeated by Lindsay Davenport in the final, 6–3, 7–5, in what was a rematch of last year's semifinal.

The tournament was notable for the final US Open appearance of five-time champion Steffi Graf in the main draw, and was lost by Patty Schnyder in the fourth round. It was also the first US Open appearance of Serena Williams, where she would go on to win in the following year.
