  2. The Court in Ford Motor Co. dismissed certiorari as improvidently granted.
  3. The Court in Abdur'Rahman dismissed certiorari as improvidently granted.
  4. The Court in Borden Ranch stated only that the lower court's judgment was affirmed by an equally divided Court.
  5. Dow Chemical summarily vacated and remanded the lower court in part for further consideration in light of Syngenta Crop Protection, Inc. v. Henson, 537 U.S. 28 (2002); the decision noted that the judgment was otherwise affirmed by an equally divided Court.
  6. Rehnquist was initially appointed by Nixon to the Court as an Associate Justice. He was subsequently appointed to serve as Chief Justice by President Ronald Reagan and confirmed in that position September 26, 1986.
