Nikolay Davydenko was the defending champion, but did not qualify for the event.
Roger Federer won the tournament after beating Rafael Nadal 6–3, 3–6, 6–1 in the final. It was his fifth title of the year and his fifth year-end championships title. The single set that he lost to Nadal was the only set he lost in the entire tournament. He beat all the other contenders in straight sets.
The semifinal between Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray was voted as the best ATP match of the year, with Nadal overcoming Murray in three tight sets.[1]
