On 5 September 2014, a SOCATA TBM 900 crashed into the Caribbean Sea, near the Jamaican coast.[1][2][3]

After the pilot became unresponsive during a flight from Greater Rochester International Airport, Rochester, New York, United States to Naples, Florida, two F-15 aircraft were scrambled to trail the flight. The pilots noted that the windows were frosted over, leading to speculation that the pilot had been incapacitated due to hypoxia as a result of cabin depressurization.[4][5][6]

Accident

The TBM-900 airplane was en route from Greater Rochester International Airport, Rochester, New York, United States to Naples Municipal Airport, Naples, Florida, United States when it failed to change course to Naples. The airplane continued off the east coast of Florida, over the Bahamas and Cuba before it lost altitude north of Jamaica, over 1700 miles from its origin of Rochester. The plane crashed into Caribbean Sea, near Jamaica after running out of fuel.[7]

Crew and passengers

It is thought that the airplane belonged to Larry Glazer,[8] a building redeveloper in Rochester, New York who owned the Xerox Tower and Bausch & Lomb Place buildings, along with several other structures through Buckingham Properties and was leading redevelopment efforts in downtown Rochester, and that he and his wife were aboard the plane. The Coast Guard's 7th District command centre in Miami said three people were reportedly on board the plane.[9][10] His wife, Jane, was a business leader in her own right, as the founder of local catalog company QCI Direct.[11]

Search and recovery

A US Coast Guard cutter and a helicopter crew were helping in the search off Jamaica and, on 8 September 2014, the search for survivors was terminated indefinitely.[12] On January 13, 2015, the Eclipse Group of Annapolis, Maryland, was hired to search for the plane and the remains of Larry and Jane Glazer. The search began on Jan. 13 in collaboration with the Jamaican government. On January 22, 2015, the plane and remains of Larry and Jane Glazer were recovered in the Caribbean Sea. The wreckage was found in the water about two miles deep.[13]
