The 2016–17 Rutgers Scarlet Knights men's basketball team represents Rutgers University–New Brunswick during the 2016–17 NCAA Division I men's basketball season. The Scarlet Knights, led by first year head coach Steve Pikiell, play their home games at the Louis Brown Athletic Center as third year members of the Big Ten Conference. The Knights began the season 5–0 for the first time they since 2000.
Previous season
The Scarlet Knights finished the 2015–16 season with a record of 7–25, 1–17 in Big Ten play to finishing in last place in conference. They lost in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament to Nebraska.
