Abu Taher Mohammad Shamsuzzaman (known as ATM Shamsuzzaman) is a Bangladeshi film and television actor, director and screen-playwright.[1][2] He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2015 by the Government of Bangladesh.[3]
Early life and career
Shamsuzzaman's introduction to writing began when he was a school student. For the publication of a school magazine, he started penning a short story titled Obohela, inspired by the tale of poet Ferdowsi.
He started his career in film as an assistant director and worked with directors like Khan Ataur Rahman, Kazi Zahir and Subhash Dutta. Then, he used to act as a proxy actor when actors of small roles could not arrive in time at the set. He used to play the roles in their absence.
He began his venture by playing the character of Ramzan in the play Shangshaptak which was aired in 1960.[1]
Controversy
According to a probe report of "Nilima Ibrahim Committee", a six-member committee led by educationist Nilima Ibrahim, Shamsuzzaman was suspended from the television and radio programmes because of his alleged role in favor of Pakistan army during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971.[4]
Personal life
Shamsuzzaman has six sons. In March 2012, one of his sons, ATM Kholikuzzaman Kushol, killed another son ATM Kamaluzzaman Kabir.[2] Shamsuzzaman testified in court and in 2014, Kushol got the life sentence in prison.[5][6]
