Allmusic awarded the album 4½ stars with its review by Scott Yanow stating, "Friedman's playing (which shows the strong influence of modern classical music, particularly in its chords) rewards repeated listenings".[2]
Down Beat critic Pete Welding had this to say about A Day in the City in his April 26, 1962 review: "Friedman is a pianist of extraordinary ingenuity and originality. Friedman will strike most listeners as a spiritual cohort of Bill Evans, for their approaches are markedly similar."
