Aaju Peter

Aaju Peter CM (b. 1960) is an Inuk lawyer, activist and sealskin clothes designer. In 2012, she received the Order of Canada, with her investiture biography stating:

Aaju Peter is an ardent defender of the rights of Canada’s northern Indigenous people. An Inuk clothing designer, lawyer and activist, she is committed to preserving Inuit culture and language. Travelling internationally, she has raised global awareness of the challenges confronting Canada’s most northern inhabitants. She also speaks about issues related to sustainability and resources, and their impact on the traditional way of life.[1]

Born in 1960 in Arkisserniaq in northern Greenland, her family travelled as a child before Peter settled in Iqaluit in 1981. She has travelled across Greenland, Europe, and Canada, performing modern drum dance and traditional singing and displaying sealskin fashions. She graduated from Akitsiraq Law School in 2005 and was called to the bar in 2007. She has appeared in the documentary films Angry Inuk (2016) and Arctic Defenders (2013).[2][3]
