This article is about a Canadian independent artist. For the Polydor/Universal hip hop artist, see Absent Minded (Swedish rapper).

Christopher Atwell (born December 18, 1979), professionally known as Absent Minded, is a Canadian rapper, producer and recording artist[1]

Career

He released his first full-length album “Master Plan” in 2006 on his own independent label, LOD Development. Primarily self-produced, the album featured production by Classified, Orthodox and Sleeps, as well as guest appearances by Poizunus, iLLvibe and Q. The record was reviewed by multiple websites that review submissions of indie music.[2][3][4] It received attention on Canadian campus and community radio stations, landing a position on multiple Hip Hop charts between October (2006) and May (2007).

In 2010, he released a collaborative effort with Canadian rapper Q, entitled “Absent Minded & Q – Gem Cutterz”.[5][6] This album was also released on his own independent record label, LOD Development. The 15-track album was produced entirely by Absent Minded and featured guest appearances by Jordan Croucher (JRDN), iLLvibe, Poizunus and Shauna Z. The record landed a position on a local London, Ontario independent hip hop chart, and also on a Canadian college music station chart, Earshot-Online, between November (2010) and January (2011).[7][8]

On December 31, 2011, Absent Minded and iLLvibe released “Blunts & Roses” an international mixtape with multiple guest appearances, including UK rappers Byro and Twizzy; and Canadian rappers QShinobi, Allin Clark, Devilz Speciez, Jus Frais and Spesh K.[9][10][11][12] Produced by Absent Minded, the mixtape was made available for free download.

In 2013, Absent Minded teamed up with Brian Duggan to form Red Orbit.[13][14][15] On May 14, 2014, the production duo independently released a 6-track EP entitle “Discovery”. The EP features collaborations with Marcel Preston (Sky Terminal), Lukas Rossi, Carleigh Aikins and Kent Martell (Awaking State). On September 11, 2014, the duo successfully funded a Kickstarter campaign achieving 130% of their financial goal. The campaign was created to raise enough funds to run a limited edition vinyl pressing of the "Discovery" EP.[16]

Personal life

Absent Minded was born in Pembroke, Ontario, Canada to an English speaking father and French speaking mother. The first of two boys, his family was regularly posted around the country due to his father being a member of the Canadian Armed Forces. He attended two high schools, Collège catholique Samuel-Genest (Ottawa, Ontario) and École secondaire catholique Nouvelle-Alliance (Barrie, Ontario). He is a Georgian College business graduate.
