Aisling Bea (/ˌæʃlɪŋ ˈbiː/; birth name Aisling O'Sullivan)[1] was born on 16 March 1984[2] and is an Irish actress, comedian and writer.[3][4] She won The Gilded Balloon's So You Think You're Funny award at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2012.
Early life and education
Bea was born in County Kildare, Ireland, to Brian and Helen O'Sullivan (née Moloney), a retired professional flat race jockey.[1] She has a sister, Sinead.[5]
Bea's grandfather is Irish language novelist and poet Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin. Bea attended London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and has a degree in French and Philosophy from Trinity College in Dublin.[4][6]
Career
In 2012, Bea beat eight other comedians to win the Gilded Balloon So You Think You're Funny award at the 2012 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, making her the second woman to have won it in the award's 25-year history.[7]
In 2013, Bea was nominated for Best Newcomer in the Foster's Edinburgh Comedy Awards, latterly the Perrier awards, for her show C'est La Bea.[8]
She has appeared as a guest on a number of panel comedy shows, including 8 Out of 10 Cats (latterly as a team captain), Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Celebrity Squares, Would I Lie to You?, A League of Their Own, Duck Quacks Don't Echo, Room 101, Insert Name Here, The Big Fat Quiz of Everything and The Jonathan Ross Show. She has also appeared performing stand-up on Russell Howard's Good News Extra, Channel 4's Comedy Gala and Live at the Apollo.
Personal life
Bea's professional name is a homage to her father, Brian, who died when she was young.[1] She chose the name during drama school, as another actress already used her birth name in the industry.[5]
