Akot is a city of Vidharbah Region and a municipal council in Akola district in the Indian state of Maharashtra.
Geography
Akot is located at 21°06′N 77°04′E / 21.1°N 77.06°E. It has an average elevation of 345 metres (1131 feet).
Demographics
As of the 2011 India census,[1] Akot had a population of 92,637. Males constitute 52% of the population and females 48%. Akot has an average literacy rate of 70.8%, higher than the national average of 59.5%; 74.8% of the males and 66.6% of the females are literate. 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.
Transport
Akot is well connected by road with Akola, Shegaon, Telhara, Paratwada, Anjangaon, Daryapur, Murtijapur and Amravati. Many private buses also operates daily to Pune, Nagpur, Shirdi and Aurangabad. Akot is connected to Akola and Indore via single Meter gauge line through 2 pairs of passenger trains daily. Nearest major railway junction is Akola (located 45 km) well connected to many important cities in India and Maharashtra. Nearest International airport is Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, Nagpur located about 242 km.
Akot is a railway station on Akola-Khandwa Meter Gauge Section (opened in 1961) of Hyderabad(HYB) Division of South Central Railway(SCR). After Divisional adjustments in 2003, which saw the bifurcation of Hyderabad Division, Akot now comes under Nanded(NED) Division of SCR. The section from Akola to Khandwa passing through Akot will be taken up for Gauge Conversion a little later.

Narnala Fort - It is a historically famous Indian fort deep within the densely forested hills of the Melghat tiger reserve in the Satpura region. Narnala Hazrat Burhanoddin Tomb is a one-hour walk from Shahanur, 24 km from Akot (Akola). There is a road from Akot via Popatkhed for vehicles. The Narnala fort & nearby area is affluent with numerous flora & fauna. The place has historic importance & attracts many people every year visiting for religious reasons, tourism & adventure sports. The forest area is also a part of Melghat Tiger Reserve.
Chikhaldara - It is a situated on hills of Melghat Tiger reserve in the Satpura region. It is around 107 km from Akot via Paratwada
Shri Wari Hanuman Temple & Shri Hanuman Sagar Dam is nearby place in adjacent forest lands(Telhara taluka). The place is famous for religious tourism & adventure sports.
Akolkhed - Sant Gajanan Maharaj Vihir is situated 11 km north of Akot. This temple is situated in forest. This a very beautiful place and near that place PAZAR TALAV is present.
Mundgaon - Sant Gajanan Maharaj Paduka Santhan Mundgaon is situated on Akot Telhara road 12 km from Akot

Historical Events
28 November 1803 - The Battle of Argaon, ( Adgaon bk near Akot ), took place on 28 November 1803, between the British under the command of Governor Arthur Wellesley and the forces of Maratha under Bhonsle of Nagpur during Second Anglo-Maratha War.
Temples
- Temple of 'Narsing Maharaj', called 'Hut of Maharaj' where Narsing Maharaj entered into the state of samadhi in middle of 1700 as he felt the mission of his life was complete.
- Temple of Swami Samarth Maharaj. Once a year there is a big festival of the anniversary of Swami Samartha's birth, for which people from all over Maharashtra come to Akot.
- Temple of Ganesha with an idol said to be about 1000 years old, which is a piece of wood having the appearance of Lord Ganesha, found while digging by a worker. It was found when the town was going through a hard time of the plague epidemics, after the establishment of the idol, the epidemics disappeared.

Akot Municipal Council Website : * Akot Municipal Council Web Site ● आकोट शहरातील मध्यभागात श्री केशवराज मंदीर असुन मंदिरात श्री विष्णूची 5100 वर्षापूर्वीची मुर्ती आहे. सदर मुर्ती गंडकी शिळेत बनविलेली असुन मंदिराचे निर्माण 1680 ते 1700 च्या दरम्यान झालेले आहे.
