Al-Araby Al-Jadeed (Arabic: العربي الجديد‎‎, literally The New Arab is a progressive pan-Arab media outlet headquartered in London. It was first launched in March 2014 as an online news website by Qatari company Fadaat Media. It went on to establish a daily newspaper in September 2014.[1][2] In January 2015, Fadaat launched Al Araby TV Network as a counterweight to Al Jazeera, which is widely viewed to hold a pro-Muslim Brotherhood bias.[3]

History

Dr. Azmi Bishara, a Doha-based ex-MK founded the Arabic-language news website as the first platform launched by Al-Araby Al-Jadeed in March 2014. Six months later, they launched an Arabic daily newspaper from London. An English version of the website was inaugurated shortly after the newspaper's launch, and goes by the translated name of The New Arab.[4][5] Al-Araby Al-Jadeed now operates globally, with over 150 staff in over three offices, based in Beirut, Doha and London.[6]

Ownership and Finances

The outlet is owned by Qatar-based Fadaat Media Ltd. and Abdulrahman Elshayyal is the newspaper's CEO.[7][8] Fadaat Media is a Qatari media investment company that was created in an effort by Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani to rebalance the country’s policies towards its neighbours after the 2011 diplomatic dispute that saw Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and the UAE withdraw their ambassadors from the country. Bishara —who resides in Qatar since 2007— who is the director of the Doha-based Arab Centre for Research and Policy Studies, and a close confidant of the emir, is an outspoken opponent of the Muslim Brotherhood, founded the outlet as a counterweight to Al Jazeera and its pro-Muslim Brotherhood influence, believing that Qatar has been “too close for too long” with the group.[9][10]
