The Alaska Anchorage Seawolves are the 13 varsity athletic teams that represent the University of Alaska Anchorage, in Anchorage, Alaska, in NCAA intercollegiate sports. The vast majority of UAA's athletic teams are in NCAA Division II with the exception of the Alpine and Nordic Ski and gymnastics teams, which are members of Division I.
The Ski Team is often regarded as both the most athletically and academically competitive team, perennially placing in the top 10 of all NCAA Division 1 schools. Additionally, they perennially earn the highest team GPA out of any sports team at UAA. The Ski Team's place at UAA is in question, during fiscally uncertain times in the state of Alaska due to severe budget cuts. A panel of experts has examined the athletics departments budget shortfalls for the 2017-18 year, and has determined the only way to save money, is to cut the ski team.
The Seawolves principally compete as members of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference. Teams playing outside the GNAC include the hockey team - ranked 51st out of 60 teams in NCAA D1 - (Western Collegiate Hockey Association) the gymnastics team (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation), and the skiing team (Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association).
UAA also hosts the nationally known Great Alaska Shootout college basketball tournament every Thanksgiving.
The Seawolves' main rival are the Alaska Nanooks. [2][3]
