The Albemarle County Sheriff's Office (ACSO) provides law enforcement services for 98,970 people within 726 square miles (1,880 km2) of jurisdiction within Albemarle County, VA.
History
The ACSO was created in 1745 when Joseph Thompson was appointed as the first sheriff. At first sheriffs were appointed for a 2-year term. Then in 1895, citizens started electing sheriffs for 4-year terms. Lucian Watts was the first elected sheriff.[1]
Organization
The agency is currently headed by Sheriff J. E. "Chip" Harding. The ACSO currently has 20 full-time deputies and 40 sworn volunteers.[2]
