American Board of Dental Specialties

The American Board of Dental Specialties (ABDS) was incorporated in the State of Illinois in 2013. The formation of the ABDS was triggered after the American Dental Association (ADA) rejected the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists' (ASDA) application for Recognition of Anesthesiology as a Dental Specialty on October 22, 2012.[1] This was the fourth attempt by the ASDA for recognition of a dental specialty in anesthesiology. The 4 applications were voted on in 1994, 1997, 1999 and most recently 2012.

The ABDS was formed in advance of the void anticipated by the current legal environment. The American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID) along with the American Society of Dentist Anesthesiologists (ASDA), the American Academy of Oral Medicine (AAOM) and the American Academy of Orofacial Pain (AAOP) along with 5 individual plaintiffs filed a lawsuit against the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners in the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas on March 5, 2014. On January 21, 2016 Judge Sam Sparks ruled in favor of the plaintiffs in that Texas Administrative Code §108.54 is an unconstitutional restriction on Plaintiffs' First Amendment right to commercial free speech.[3] The decision is currently under appeal by the Texas State Board of Dental Examiners.

The ADA recognizes areas of specialty based on criteria [4]that has changed over the years. Once an area is recognized as a specialty, then a certifying board is developed and accreditation by the Commission on Dental Accreditation is required. [5] In contrast, the ABDS is composed of dental certifying boards that test knowledge in the field. [6] The ABDS compares more to the American Board of Medical Specialties [7] rather than the ADA.

Arguments have been made that the ABDS is criteria based and describe the ADA process as "..currently flawed.." [8]
