American Heritage School is a private, college preparatory, independent, nonsectarian, and co-educational day school for grades Pre-K 3 through 12 with approximately 2,800 students and a student/faculty ratio of 8:1. The campus is located in Plantation, Florida just 17 miles from the beautiful beaches of Fort Lauderdale, 2.7 miles from the second largest shopping mall in Florida with upscale, world-class restaurants and retailers, and 30 miles from downtown Miami.
History
The school was first established by William R. Laurie in 1965. American Heritage (also known as AHS, or simply "Heritage") resembles northern prep schools with its brick buildings and rigorous, traditional education in a forward-thinking, technologically advanced, well-rounded environment. American Heritage School is a tuition-only school where, in an effort to make all families equal, they do not ask for nor accept donations. The school is completely managed by veteran educators, and they have no governing board. In order to ensure that all staff has a vested interest in American Heritage, faculty and staff children receive full tuition to the school.
Academics
Through American Heritage's liberal-arts curriculum, students are instructed and supported by small class sizes in each of the three divisions: Pre Primary School (Pre-K through kindergarten), Lower School (grades 1 through grade 6), and Upper School (grades 7 through 12). The college preparatory curriculum at American Heritage serves "to develop critical thinking skills, problem solving abilities, and lifelong learning." There are over 85 student clubs and organizations, and multiple service opportunities on and off campus including pre-law, pre-med, pre-engineering, and biomedical engineering programs.
