The American International School Dhaka (AISD) is an independent co-educational day school located in Baridhara, Dhaka, Bangladesh, serving students of all nationalities in pre-kindergarten through grade 12.[1]

History

The precursor to AISD was the Dacca American Society School (DASS), founded in 1953, while Bangladesh was still East Pakistan. DASS was located in the Dhanmondi area of the city. DASS closed during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971, and AISD was founded in 1972.

At its founding in 1972, AISD was housed in a single building which was located in Gulshan, serving a small population of international students in kindergarten through Grade 8.

Curriculum

In the elementary and middle schools the curriculum is holistic and inquiry-based in nature. Students are expected to be active participants in their own learning, and are given opportunities and assistance to do so. The elementary school is an IB PYP school. The school programs over the three divisions, are structured to enable students to integrate into any English-speaking school system in the future. The high school provides a college preparatory program following an American curriculum model with all instruction in English. Courses and standards prepare students for entry into English speaking colleges and universities. The teaching philosophy and educational materials used in the school compare favorably to those employed in North America. The high school offers the IB Diploma (full and certificates) to students in Grades 11 and 12.

IB Program

The International Baccalaureate program was introduced for the first time during the 2006-2007 school year. The graduating class of 2008 was the first AISD class ever to have the chance to receive an IB diploma. AISD offers IB courses for students in the 11th and 12th grades.

Facilities

The school is situated on a 4.5-acre site. There are 60 classrooms in modern, spacious, fully air-conditioned western style buildings. The school has two libraries, four computer laboratories (with full Internet access in every classroom), six science laboratories, two gymnasiums, (one with a climbing wall) and a weight room. All instructional spaces are fully air-conditioned. The buildings also incorporate a Student Centre, Nurses Clinic, Counselling offices, Art and Music facilities, an auditorium/theatre and a school cafeteria. Facilities include a covered 25-metre heated swimming pool, two playgrounds, and a soccer/athletic field.

Activities

The school consists of a wide range of sports for the students to participate in. Besides competitions, the school offers many clubs that take place during the week for all sports and hobbies.
