American Muslims Intent on Learning and Activism
American Muslims Intent on Learning and Activism (AMILA) is an American Islamic organization founded in 1992. The acronym "AMILA" means "to work" or "to act" in Arabic.
Goals
The organization stated goals are spiritual enrichment, intellectual freedom, and community service. Founded by American-born and/or raised Muslims, AMILA was meant to supplement the activities of local mosques and Muslim organizations with events and projects of interest to the American Muslim community. Considered by many to be one of the first liberal/progressive Muslim institutions, AMILA has emphasized religious pluralism and respect between branches of Islam, equal roles for women in all phases of its operations, and concern for social justice.
