Andijan State Medical Institute (ASMI) was established in 1955 in Andijan, Uzbekistan. The Institute still keeps one of the leading positions amongst higher education facilities of the Republic Uzbekistan. Demands for the specialists on medical field have always been high, "Andijan State Medical Institute" plays big role in covering this high needs in Uzbekistan. "Andijan State Medical Institute" trains professionals who contribute their knowledge for development of medical sciences in Uzbekistan and in Central Asia.[1]
About
Andijan State Medical Institute's history goes back to the Soviet Union times; meanwhile, it is one of the most important institutions in independent Uzbekistan. The first academic year started in 1955, right after its establishment. It was established on 2 August of the year 1995 by the edict number 241 of Uzbek government. Nowadays, there are more than 2300 students at the Institute who are involved with their studies. Students at the Institute come from all regions of Republic Uzbekistan and from some parts of Central Asia. Educational process at the Institute is held by 55 departments who pay their attention on theoretical and practical knowledge, in addition there is scientific-research laboratory which is set as the part of the Institute. Lectures are given by about 505 people of personnel, 49 of which are doctors of medical sciences and professors, 177 of them are candidates of medical sciences and docents. Lessons at the Institute are held in two languages: Uzbek and Russian. There are three faculties.
Study period at the Institute is set to be 7 years, as many other high education centers on medical field. The first academic year is believed to be the foundation year. From the third course, students are taught mode specific subjects on their related professions. The last 7th year is a practical year, when all of the students spend their time on enlarging their theoretical knowledge by the practice. All students at the institute are granted with stipends each month due to their academic performance. All national universities of Uzbekistan award their students with monthly stipends, by the edict made in Uzbekistan. Some of the talented students are granted with scholarship under the name of President of Republic Uzbekistan Islam Karimov and by scholarship named after 'Abu-ali Ibn Sina". Campus of the "Andijan State Medical Institute" is supplied with class rooms, lecture halls, computer classes, laboratories and with the library. Also, "Andijan State Medical Institute" owns its clinic for the students to have practice near the campus of the Institute.[2]
Faculties
There are three faculties at the Andijan State Medical Institute: the Curative Works Faculty, the Pediatric Faculty, and the Raising Qualifications of Physicians Faculty. All are related to the medical sciences and have their own departments inside the faculties.
Curative Works Faculty
“Curative Works Faculty" of "Andijan State Medical Institute" is the oldest faculty which is currently working at the Institute. It was opened in the same year of Institute establishment in the year of 1955, on October. The first dean of the "Curative Works Faculty" was docent K.A Zufarov. During its first years of action, there were 10 departments and about 120 students at the faculty. After two years in 1957, interest to the faculty raised rapidly among the applicants and in the same year there were 470 students at the faculty, meanwhile, the dean was changed too who became docent M.G Mirzakarim. During his controlling period, faculty reached its highs, and it had one of the biggest base of textbooks in Uzbekistan. In 1970, the dean of the faculty has again changed, the new name in the history of the "Curative Works Faculty" was professor K.M Mirzayev. - 1984–1985 professor Sh.A Hamidov was the dean of faculty
- 1986–1988 docent S.H Madaminov was the dean of faculty
- From the year 1988 the dean of the faculty was scientist N.M Qurbonov who was the head of the faculty till the year of 1996.
- 1996–1997 Sh.Q Qodirov was the dean of faculty
- 1997–1999 G.M Hojimatov was the dean of faculty
- From the year of 1999 till the year of 2005 dean of the faculty was professor Q.T Xudoyberdiyev was the dean of faculty
- 2005–2008 professor, doctor of medical sciences A.M Mehmonov was the dean of faculty
- 2008–2009 docent Q.A Qo'ldashev was the dean of faculty
- 2009–2013 professor X.T Musashayxov was the dean of faculty
Nowadays, from the year of 2013 the dean of the "Curative Works Faculty" is Adham Anvarovich Gofurov who is docent and doctor of medical sciences. Nowadays students are studying in 3 branches of the faculty which are: curative works, medical pedagogics and higher education nurse. There are 14 departments at the “Curative Works Faculty”, which are mainly located inside the “Andijan State Medical Institute” campus and inside the clinics base of the Institute. Overall number of students at the faculty is estimated to be about 1740 people, from them 1405 are for the curative works branch, 213 for the medical pedagogics branch and 122 of them are for higher education nurse branch. 39 percent of the teachers at the “Curative Works Faculty” have the scientific degrees. Departments which are located inside the “Curative Works Faculty” are listed as follows:
- Traumatology, orthopedics, neurosurgery and injuries medicine
- Hospital therapy, endocrinology and hematology
- Hospital surgery and stomatology
- Languages, pedagogics and psychology

- Physical education and curative physical education
- Normal physiology, bioorganic chemistry

- 6–7 courses genecology
- 6–7 course surgery, urology and first aid
Pediatric Faculty
“Pediatric Faculty" was first established in 1966 on November. First, it was opened under another university called "Central Asian Medical Pediatric Institute in Tashkent". However, this faculty was closed in 1972. After 5 years in 1977, "Pediatric Faculty" was re-opened and was given to "Andijan State Medical Institute". Currently there are 14 departments at the faculty which are mainly located inside the campus of the university, and in the clinics of the institute. Meanwhile, some of the departments are located in some hospitals of the Andijan region. Faculty is focused on training specialists who are involved with the pediatrics. Faculty consists of 253 professors and teachers. Fourteen of them are doctors of medical sciences, 82 of them are candidates of medical sciences and docents, 142 of them are head teachers and assistants. 59,2 percent of the teachers at the faculty have their own scientific degrees respectively, which is one of the highest positions in universities which are training specialists on medical fields in Uzbekistan. Raising Qualifications of Physicians Faculty
“Raising Qualifications of Physicians Faculty" mainly focuses on giving practical knowledge for the doctors and mainly applicants of the faculty are doctors who want to get their second degrees. It was established in 1984 on 6 July by the edict number 864 of the "Public Health Ministry of Republic Uzbekistan". The first dean of the faculty was docent K.R Mirzaev. The main goal of the faculty is raising and assisting in development of qualifications of doctors in Fergana, Andijan and Namangan regions. Deans of the faculty: 1984–1988 docent K.R Mirzaev, 1988–1998 professor T.Z Jumabaev, 1998–2000 docent B.E Begmatov, 2001–2003 doctor of medical sciences, docent K.A Yusupov, 2003–2005 professor X.T Musashayxov, 2005–2008 professor G.M Hodjimatov. Current dean of the "Raising Qualifications of Physicians Faculty" is candidate for medical sciences, docent Gulchehra Usmanovna Nazarova. “Raising Qualifications of Physicians Faculty" at "Andijan State Medical Institute" cooperates with "Tashkent Institution of Raising doctor's qualification" and with "Tashkent Medical Academy". Studies at the "Raising Qualifications of Physicians Faculty" are held by the plan which is given from "Public Health Ministry of Republic Uzbekistan". There are seven departments at the "Raising Qualifications of Physicians Faculty" and each departments gives specific lessons for the students. The name of the lessons and duration in one academic year are given as follows:
- Therapy – 6580 hours per year
- Pediatrics – 5938 hours per year
- Neonatology – 3770 hours per year
- Surgery – 3965 hours per year
- Genecology – 3570 hours per year
- Ophthalmology – 3770 hours per year
- First aid – 2530 hours per year
One of the most important facts about the "Raising Qualifications of Physicians Faculty" is that, only the doctors who have the worked on their related for at least three years can apply to the faculty, and continue their studies and scientific researches.[3][4]

As many other universities of Republic Uzbekistan, "Andijan State Medical Institute" has colleges and academic lyceums which are linked to the Institute. There are 24 different colleges and academic lyceums which are given under the "Andijan State Medical Institute", which are located in different destinations of Andijan region. All the secondary-specialized facilities (colleges and academic lyceums) are directly controlled by the departments of Institute respectively. “Andijan State Medical Institute" is one of the UZHEALTH tempus international program co-founders. Main purpose of the UZHEALTH is learning higher education structures to enhance public health learning and teaching in the Republic of Uzbekistan. Dormitory
From the first years of "Andijan State Medical Institute's" established, there was dormitory for the students and the student-town in which those dormitories were located. Between the years of 1960 and 1961, Institute have built 2 dormitories for its students, and their capacitance was 800 people. In 1964, new dormitory was built, which was able to hold about 400 more people after this occasion again some new buildings started its working period. In 1974, institute has built the dormitory for 630 students, in the year of 1986 students town was fulfilled with new building for 230 students. After independence of Republic Uzbekistan in 2000 "Andijan State Medical Institute" opened new building for the "Social-humanitarian sciences" department which was able to have 400 students at one time. After creation of 2 academic lyceums under the Institute, students-town saw new building for 200 students under the base of lyceums. Each dormitory at the student's town has its own kitchen, rest rooms, study and computer rooms. Nowadays, the student's town is controlled by H.Gulamov. In 2010 Andijan city received the "Universiade – 2010" competitions which are held in Uzbekistan between the universities and institutions. Because of this "Andijan State Medical Institute" has reconstructed the buildings in student's town. Big sports halls, small buildings, living rooms were built inside the student's town. Nowadays, these complexes are being used by the students of "Andijan State Medical Institute".[8]
Rectorate
The rectorate of "Andijan State Medical Institute" consists of five representatives who share leading positions at the ASIM. Currently, the reactor and head of the "Andijan State Medical Institute" is Sadikov Abdushukur Abdujamilevich who is the doctor of medical sciences and docent. Vice-rectors on educational process is Alimdjanov Ibrohim Inamovich, who is the professor and doctor of medical sciences. The second vice-rector of the Institute is Madazimov Madamin Muminovich, who is the professor and doctor of medical sciences. Vice-rector of the ASIM on scientific researches of the Institute is Khodjimatov Gulomiddin Mihnodjievich who is the professor and doctor of medical sciences. Last vice-rector of the Institute is Mamajonov Zafar Abdujalilovich.[9]
