Andrea Gibbs
Andrea Lauren Gibbs (born in Donnybrook, Western Australia) is an Australian comedian, actress and currently a radio presenter for ABC[1] on 'Weekends with Andrea Gibbs'.
Early life
She spent her childhood on a family farm in the small country town of Donnybrook, Western Australia. She attended Donnybrook District High School and Bunbury Senior High School. In 1995 she moved to Perth, Western Australia at the age of 17. She attended Curtin University of Technology where she completed a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in theatre.
Career
After working in Edinburgh, Scotland for a year with the Edinburgh International Arts Festival, she returned to Perth in 2001 and joined improvising comedy troupe The Big HOO HAA!. She performed with them regularly as well as writing, producing, and acting in numerous other theatre productions and short films. She is one of Perth's most outstanding comedians having performed both Australia-wide and overseas (US/Canada).
In 2004, she entered Triple J’s Raw Comedy competition performing stand-up for the first time and was a Western Australian state finalist. The following year she won the state final and performed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in the nationals.
Late in 2005 she was headhunted by Southern Cross Broadcasting and co-hosted 96fm’s Breakfast Show, one of WA's highest rating breakfast shows, until 2007. She has continued to work in radio with ABC & RTRfm as a guest.
In 2006 she was hand picked by the Melbourne International Comedy Festival talent scouts to perform in The Comedy Zone, a showcase of Australian comedy’s hottest new releases. She returned there for the 2008 festival with her highly successful one-person show STARKERS.
Her television credits include 'Very Small Business' (ABCTV) and 'Stepmonsters' (Nickelodeon).
In 2009 she made her feature film debut in 'My Year without Sex', written and directed by Sarah Watts and starring Matt Day and Sacha Horler.
In 2013 she toured her solo show around Australia and New Zealand[2] with fellow comedian Bonnie Davies. In 2014 she also performed as one of the 'Famettes' in Famous Sharron's show at FRINGE WORLD 'The Fame Game', which also toured to New Zealand,[3] with Sam Longley, Sean Walsh and Alwyn Nixon Lloyd from The Big HOO-HAA!
In 2014 she toured with Perth Theatre Company and Sydney Theatre Company's production called 'Eight Gigabytes of Hardcore Pornography' [4] and was called a 'revelation' by The Australian.[5] She also spoke at TEDxPERTH[6] about the 'Power of Storytelling'.
Andrea has performed with Perth Theatre Company, Red Ryder Productions and Barkin Gecko Theatre Company and she appears regularly in The Big HOO HAA! and Free Love Improv in Perth.
Currently
Andrea is the co-creator of Barefaced Stories and can be seen on stage with The Big HOO-HAA! currently touring Australia.
