Ariane de Rothschild (born Langner, born in November 1965 in El Salvador) is President of the Executive Committee of Edmond de Rothschild since 2015, and vice-president of the Edmond de Rothschild Holding SA since 1999.[1] She has been married to Benjamin de Rothschild since January 23, 1999 with whom she has four daughters.[2]

Education

Ariane de Rothschild holds an MBA from Pace University in New York.

Early years

Ariane de Rothschild was born in El Salvador to a father who was a senior executive at an international pharmaceutical company. Until the age of eighteen, Ariane de Rothschild lived in Bangladesh, Colombia and the former Zaire (DRC).

First a broker at Société Générale in New York City, she then joined the U.S insurance group AIG, and oversaw its entry and development into France and Europe.

Since 2008, Ariane de Rothschild has been a board member of the major entities of Edmond de Rothschild group, and was appointed vice-president of Edmond de Rothschild SA in 2009. She was appointed President of the Executive Committee of Edmond de Rothschild in January 2015.[3]

Career

Ariane de Rothschild initially joined Edmond de Rothschild to manage the Group's non-financial activities (wineries, agriculture and hospitality) and transform the philanthropic heritage of the family into an international network.[4] She is committed to social empowerment through the arts and entrepreneurship with programs such as AIMS (Paris Ecole des Beaux Arts), Count me In (Carnegie Hall, New York), Scale up (ESSEC Business School), CRECE (Unltd Spain) and the Ariane de Rothschild Fellowship.[5]

She has also shifted the family's investments in private equity towards sustainable financial activities,[6] taking into account the social and environmental impacts of their operations.[7] This vision paved the way for the creation of the "Moringa fund"[8][9] dedicated to agroforestry in Africa and South America, as well as the "Ginkgo fund"[10] focused on brownfield redevelopment en Europe.[11][12] She also develops investments in high-potential areas, including African ventures, biotechnologies,[13] earth sciences and FinTech.

In 2008 she joined the managing board of the Group's major entities and was appointed vice-president of Edmond de Rothschild Group's supervisory board in 2009.[14][15]

Since January 30, 2015 Ariane de Rothschild is the President of the Executive Committee and oversees the Group's operations since the departure of its previous CEO, Christophe de Backer, on January 14, 2015.[16][17]

Since her appointment, Ariane de Rothschild has been conducting a strategic restructuring and modernisation of the Group regarding the Group's international activities, a new IT plateform and sector-wide regulatory forecasting (MiFID II, MiFIR).[18][19] She has also made the Group's management more international and diversified, and infused a greater gender balance.[20]

Alongside her husband, who is the chairman of the supervisory board, Ariane de Rothschild embodies the preservation of the family' shareholder structure and its focus on sustainable finance at a time when "the banking sector must ensure its stability, regain the confidence of the public and contribute to the growth and progress through its ethical behavior".[21][22]

Philanthropy

She has committed herself to the family's foundations, focused on arts and culture, health, social entrepreneurship and intercultural dialogue,[23] in addition to supporting extensive philanthropic activities in Israel.[24][25]

Ariane de Rothschild also launched a unique program and network to foster intercultural dialogue through social entrepreneurship and social sciences at the University of Cambridge especially between the Jewish and Muslim communities. This program carries her name, as the Ariane de Rothschild Fellowship Program, with more than 150 Fellows graduated from this program since 2009. Applications and selection for the program starts in January each year.[26][27]

She has also encouraged the creation of a social investment bond, the first of its kind in Israel, in order to reduce the number of students dropping out of university. This investment is guaranteed by the Edmond de Rothschild Foundation.[28]

Non-financial activities

Ariane de Rothschild oversees the development of non-financial activities in Edmond de Rothschild with a particular focus on "la ferme des 30 arpents" in Seine-et-Marne, near Paris, and the Group's wineries in the Bordeaux region (Château Clarke, Château Malmaison, Château des Laurets), Spain (Vega Sicilia Rothschild), in South-Africa (Ruppert & Rothschild) and Argentina (Flechos de los Andes).[29]

She also presides over the operation of the Domaine du Mont d'Arbois in Megève which offers hospitality restaurant and leisure services.[30]
