Dick Rifenburg was a star athlete at Arthur Hill High School in football, basketball, and track and field. He led Arthur Hill to MHSAA Class A high school state championship in 1944. The Lumberjacks won the game against Kalamazoo Central High School and an undefeated season (19-0). He scored 24 points, including 17 in the second half. Dick was also the state champion shot put and high jump in 1944. He led Lumberjacks to their first State Track Championship. Rifenburg was named All State in football, basketball and track. In 2002, He was inducted into The Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame.[7]

NBA player Jason Richardson of the Philadelphia 76ers, winner of two NBA Slam Dunk titles, is an alumnus of Arthur Hill, as is former Drake University point guard Adam Emmenecker, who went from three-year walk-on to Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year in his final season in 2008 and current Oakland Athletics pitching coach Curt Young.

The 1973 Arthur Hill Lumberjack football team, coached by George Ihler, is still the only Class A high school football team in Michigan state high school history to complete a season untied, undefeated and unscored upon and outscoring its opponents 443–0. It was the first Class A football team to do so since 1933.[8] The Class C Charlevoix Red Rayders also completed a season untied, undefeated and unscored upon in 1958.[9]
