Asad Umar (Urdu: اسد عمر ) (born 8 September 1961 as as Asad Farooq) [1] is a Pakistani legislator and retired businessman who serve's as high-ranking member of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf since April 2012.[2][3]
Born in Rawalpindi, he was raised mainly in Karachi. Umar studied commerce at the Government College, Karachi and moved on to receive his MBA in finance from IBA Karachi in 1984. He initially joined HSBC but left few month's later to work with ExxonMobil in Karachi.[4] He moved to work as an analyst at the company's Canadian operations in 1989, but returned back to Pakistan in 1991, after the employee buyout of ExxonMobil's Pakistan's operation's which led to the establishment of the Engro Corp. He continued working with Engro, and in January 1997 was appointed as the head of Engro's chemicals division.[5]
Umar became the chief executive officer of Engro in January 2004, and remained so until April 2012. During his tenure he established Engro Foods, while expanding the company's existing operations. He also oversaw the increase in corporate revenues from Rs.13 billion in 2004 to Rs,114 billion in 2011.[6] His tenure at Engro made him one of the most popular and highly paid CEOs in Pakistan.[7] He joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf shortly after his departure from Engro, and worked as party's national campaign manager during the 2013 elections.[8] He was elected to the National Assembly in August 2013 from Islamabad and serve's as a frontbencher for the party.[9]
Political career
Asad Umar resigned as CEO of Engro Corporation on 19 April 2012 and joined Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. At PTI, he will be part of committee to work on a draft paper to suggest economic reforms to take Pakistan out of current financial crisis. Asad Umar was appointed Central Senior Vice President of PTI on 21 April 2012.[10] He was elected as a Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan for NA-48 Islamabad in a 2013 by-election.[11] Asad Umar appointed as National Campaign Manager for 2013 General Elections.[12] Asad Umar Appointed as Chairman PTI Policy Council.[13]
