Biography
Ramanath Rai was born 8 March 1952 to Bellipady Perne Narayan Rai and Girija Rai. He entered politics when he became a member of the Indian National Congress. He has represented the Bantwal constituency of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly since 1985[8][9][10][11] until he lost it to his cousin B. Nagaraja Shetty in 2004.[12] He however won the same constituency in 2008.[13] In his long career as a legislator in the Karnataka Assembly he has served as minister holding various portfolios.
During their return journey after visiting Irpu Falls near Srimangala in Virajpet taluk of Kodagu district on Sunday July 25, Rai's son, Deepu, and his four friends had fought with some locals on the question of parking their car in front of a local's house. The case was referred to police station, and the policemen had struck a truce between the two sides and sent them away after getting them to execute bonds.
He also won 2013 Assembly election from Bantwal. He has been given the portfolio of Minister for Forest, Environment and Ecology.[14]
