Banaras Hindu University Students' Union

The Banaras Hindu University Students' Union generally abbreviated as "BHU Students' Union or BHUSU", is Students' union under the Dean of students at the Banaras Hindu University. The Students' Union is responsible for representing students, both within the University and externally for all academic, non-academic and student welfare purposes.[1] From 2007 to 2014, Banaras Hindu University had a "Students' Council". In Aug 2013, the University administration decided to replace the "Students' Council" with the "Students' Union" and subsequently Students' Union elections were held in Sep 2012 .[1][2] Banaras Hindu University Students' Union is formed under the directions of Supreme Court of India which was based on recommendations from "Lyngdoh committee" headed by James Michael Lyngdoh (former Chief Election Commissioner of India).[3]

History

Banaras Hindu University Students' Union was established in the early 20th century (exact year not known). In its entire existence, the Students' Union has been suspended and banned several times. Its structure has also been changed from Students' union to Students' council and vice versa. The Students' Union in the Banaras Hindu University has a precedence of violence, strikes, lockdowns, expulsions, rioting and deaths.[1][2][4][5]

1958–1966

In 1958, The Banaras Hindu University witnessed a students' strike. This resulted in banning the Students' Union for a period of eight years; from 1958 to 1966.[4]

Early 1990s

In the early 1990s, when Professor R. P. Rastogi was the Vice-Chancellor of the Banaras Hindu University, a student strike took place which resulted in banning of the Students' Union.[4]

1997–2007

Following the death of two students in 1997 due to police firing, the Students' Union was banned for an indefinite period. Violence had erupted in the campus due to cancellation of nomination papers of a candidate "Manoj Singh". An inquiry committee indicted the University and district administration for the death of the two students.[2][4]

2008–2014

In 2008, the Students' Union was replaced by a "Students' council". Unlike the Students' Union where the president was elected directly, in the Students' Council, every class elected its representative and the elected representatives in-turn elected the President (and other office bearers).[1] In Aug 2013, the Students' Council was disbanded and the University administration; based on the directions of Supreme Court of India (which was based on recommendations from "Lyngdoh committee" section 6.2) decided to re-introduce the "Students' Union".[1][3] In Oct 2014, some students went on hunger strike, demanding elections. Elections dates were subsequently announced on 11 Nov 2014 and the process was due to be completed by 30 Nov 2014. However, the elections had to be cancelled and the Students' Union had to be kept on hold due to violence, arson and clashes between students and police during the nomination process.[2][6]

In 2015 elections Dean of students is elected as President,Amardeep Singh as Vice-President, Priyesh Pandey as General Secretary,Rajat Singh as Library Secretary and Roshan Pandey as Joint-Secretary.

2016

In 2016 Elections, Dean of students elected as a President,Shantanu Singh Gaur as Vice -President,Atul Yadav as a General Secretary,Akash Pandey as a Joint Secretary and Avinash Ojha as a Library Secretary
