Banday

Banday tribe is the native tribe of Bandipora in Kashmir valley. This tribe people mostly served in kashmir administrations during medieval kashmir history.

Some members of the tribe were in kashmir armies like Abdul Gafoor Banday who was fighting the Chaks when they were imposing oppression on peoples. His grandson fought Yusuf Shah's army at Baramulla just before Akbar invaded Kashmir. Abdul Gafoor's great grand son was Amananullah Shah Banday and he had raised a small army and launched attack on Poonch. He captured some territories from local mughal Subadar but after six months his territory was attacked by Mughal forces with large numbers. After two weeks of fighting Shah lost lost of his army. However Shah Banday kept fighting till his lat breath and today his grave is located in Mendhar Poonch. All of his descendants live in Poonch. One of his descendats was a close freind of Shaikh Abdullah and was one of the most firm supporter of Independent Kashmir movement.[1]
