Barclay Harding Warburton II (June 15, 1898 – November 26, 1936) was an American socialite, farmer, and aviator.[1][2] Around 1919 he worked for the American Relief Administration in their mission to Poland as a sergeant.[2][3][4][5] He was also an assistant director at 20th Century Fox.[6]

Biography

He was born on June 15, 1898 in Philadelphia to Barclay Harding Warburton I and Mary Brown Wanamaker.[7] During World War I he served overseas in the United States Army Signal Corps with the rank of sergeant and was later promoted to a lieutenant.[4][8]

He married Rosamond Lancaster December 10, 1919 in Elkton, Maryland and they had a son, Barclay Harding Warburton III.[2][9] After a divorce in 1926 she married William Kissam Vanderbilt II.[8][10] In 1922 he received his Royal Aero Club certificate from the Grahame-White school of flying.[11] In 1930 he announced plans to fly solo around the world.[12][13] In 1931 he married Evelyn Hall Pierce in Chicago, Illinois.[3][14]

On June 27, 1936 he set off a firework at a party for Harold Ross that exploded in his face.[15]

He was in a hunting accident on November 26, 1936. He said that his shotgun had accidentally fired while he was climbing a fence while hunting for pheasant at his Saracen Farm near Doylestown, Pennsylvania. He survived long enough to make it back to the house and was taken to Abington Memorial Hospital where he died the same day.[6][16]
