The Assyrians of Barzan
Prior to the 1917, there was a sizable Assyrian presence in the city, with two Chaldean Catholic churches. However, after the Assyrian Genocide, many Assyrians of Barzan were not allowed to return to their homes in Barzan and were resettled in the village of Rumta, located around modern-day Dohuk. However, one Assyrian village near Barzan to the east named Bidial appears to have rebuilt its church and to be at least partially populated.[1][2]
