About Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited
Established in 2007, Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited is headquartered in India.[1] It is a specialized infrastructure company that identifies and develops Aerotropolis projects.[2]
Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited is a partnership between Partha Ghosh, Utsav Parekh, Ram Ratan Modi and Changi Airport International, IL&FS Airports, and West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation Limited (WBIDC).[3][4] Changi Airport has a stake of 36.32 percent.[5] IL&FS Airports Limited owns 11.71 per cent while Partha Ghosh, Utsav Parekh and Ram Ratan Modi together hold 50.95 per cent.[6] WBIDC owns 1.02 per cent.[7]
Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited is developing India’s first Aerotropolis in Durgapur called Sujalaam Skycity.[8] It is present on the Golden Quadrilateral on National Highway 2.[9] Sujalaam is situated at a distance of 180 km from Kolkata.[10] Townland Group is undertaking urban planning, Tata consulting Engineers is undertaking infrastructural development and STUP, France is overseeing road planning and traffic development.[11] Larsen & Toubro (L&T) CE is constructing drains, roads, bridges, sewage treatment plants and water-supply networks.[12]
Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited has finished the development of Sujalaam’s airport called Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport.[13] It has created the Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport over an abandoned World War 2 strip in the Andal district.[14] The airport has been created as per Aerodrome Reference Code 4C and has a runway length of 2,800 m + 45 m – which can be extended to 3315 m.[15] This runway is capable of handling Airbus A 319/320 and Boeing 737-800 aero planes.[16] The design, development and management has been undertaken by Changi Airport Planners and Engineers, Singapore.[17]
Controversy
The West Bengal allotted BAPL 1,820 acres of land in 2011 worth INR 10,000 crore for the construction of the airport city.[18] However, the government had to rework the land transfer as it was found that the allotted land was already leased to Coal India’s subsidiary Eastern Coalfields Limited.[19]
