Sports and Athletics

Big Bear High School offers programs such as Football, Baseball, Basketball (Boys and Girls), Volleyball, Softball, Wrestling, Golf, Tennis, Cross Country, and Soccer. Big Bear High is associated with the CIF program. Big Bear High fields a very competitive cross country team and football team for their division. The football team won the C.I.F championships in 1992 and 2006. The school also has had C.I.F championships for Baseball in 1993, and Softball in 1988. However, the team with the most success is the boys' cross country team. They finished 2nd in the state in 2005 and 2009, and won the California state championship 3 years in a row from 2006-2008. The girls cross country team also achieved a 3rd-place finish at the state championships in 2013.

The school also has few notable alumni such as Ryan Hall, who was National High School Mile Champion in 2000, and is the fastest American-born marathoner in history. He was also an Olympic marathoner and came in 10th place at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Jordan Romero, the youngest person ever to climb Mount Everest and the Seven Summits, the highest point on all seven continents, graduated in 2014. Ryan Hall's younger brother Chad Hall, was national and state champion in 2006 in cross country. Caleb Webb is another outstanding runner, having won 2 California State Cross Country Championships as well as a State Track title. In addition, Webb recently placed 3rd individually at the Nike Cross Country Nationals in Oregon, joining the Hall brothers as the third student from his high school to place in the top 3 at the national championships. In track, Ryan Hall broke the 29-year old State Meet 1600m record in 2001, running 4:02.62. Soon afterward, he also ran 1500m in 3:42.70, equivalent to a 4-minute mile. Big Bear is one of only a handful of high schools in California to have had three boys break 9 minutes for 3200 meters. Ryan Hall ran 8:55.12 in 2000, Chad Hall ran 8:58.18 in 2006, and Caleb Webb ran 8:47.30 in 2015.
