William "Billy" Goundry (28 March 1934 – February 2012) was an English football wing half. A "hard player",[3] he is best remembered for his six years in the Football League with Brentford, making over 140 appearances.

Playing career

Huddersfield Town

A wing half, Horne began his career as an amateur with Division One side Huddersfield Town, failing to make a first team appearance and departing in 1955.[1]

Brentford

Goundry signed for Division Three South side Brentford in May 1955.[1] Goundry was a regular part of a team which consistently challenged for promotion from the division, only to fall short. Not known for his goalscoring, Goundry netted five goals in his 12 appearances during the 1957–58 season,[1][4] when he was deployed in the forward line.[5] He made a career-high 42 appearances during the 1959–60 season,[4] but found himself released at the end of the following campaign due to maximum wage restrictions.[1] Goundry made 148 appearances and scored 12 goals during his six years at Griffin Park.[1]

Non-league football

After his release from Brentford, Goundry dropped into non-league football and linked up with former Bees teammates Vernon Avis and Dennis Heath at Southern League Premier Division side Bedford Town in the summer of 1961.[1][6] He made 156 appearances and scored five goals before departing in 1964 and seeing out his career with a spell at Hastings United.[6]

Personal life

Prior to turning professional with Brentford, Goundry was in the army.[1]
