Black Theatre Alliance

Black Theatre Alliance is an alliance of theater companies formed to nurture the growth and development of black theater in the United States. [1]

History

The BTA was formed in 1971 by Delano Stewart, Hazel Brant and Roger Furhman. [1] It initially comprised seven theater companies and made a newsletter to promote black theater. [2] By 1973, the number grew to 139 black theaters. [3] It holds an annual theater festival and also includes Dance companies. [4] In 1995 it started the Black Theater Alliance awards and has gone on till present day. [5]
