Brokenhead Ojibway Nation

Brokenhead Ojibway Nation is an Anishinaabe (Saulteaux/Ojibwa) First Nation located approximately 64 kilometres (40 mi) northeast of Winnipeg, Manitoba. As of May 2010, the First Nation had a registered population of 1,733 people, of which their own on-reserve population was 598. The main reserve of Brokenhead 4 is surrounded by the Rural Municipality of St. Clements, except for a small lakeshore on Lake Winnipeg.

Reserves

The First Nation have reserved for themselves three reserves:

272 hectares (670 acres) Birch Landing Indian Reserve (surrounded by Alexander)(50°39′30″N 96°35′25″W / 50.658214°N 96.59016°W / 50.658214; -96.59016)
5,412.8 hectares (13,375 acres) Brokenhead 4 Indian Reserve, which serves as their main reserve, containing the settlement of Scanterbury, Manitoba
3 hectares (7.4 acres) Na-Sha-Ke-Penais Indian Reserve (surrounded by East St. Paul) (49°57′33″N 97°01′09″W / 49.959091°N 97.01918°W / 49.959091; -97.01918)

Governance

Brokenhead Ojibway Nation is governed by the Act Electoral System of government. The current leadership is Chief James (jim) Bear and Councillors Paul Harvey Chief, Winston DesJarlais, Wendell Sinclair SR and Wendell Sinclair JR. The Chief's and Councillors' two-year elected term began on April 11, 2014, and will conclude in April 2016. Brokenhead Ojibway Nation is a member of the Southeast Resource Development Council and a signatory to Treaty 1.
