Centre Européen de Recherches Internationales et Stratégiques (CERIS) is a private graduate university located in Brussels, Belgium. The university was founded in 1985 on the initiative of a group of university professors, diplomats and senior civil servants. The objective of CERIS is to promote research and post graduate education in the field of international relations.
History
Centre Européen de Recherches Internationales et Stratégiques was established in 1985 in Brussels, Belgium by group of university professors, diplomats and senior civil servants. In 1988 CERIS began offering its flagship Master of Arts in International Politics program. CERIS began offering a distance learning option for this program in 2005. In 2008, CERIS began its partnership with the Institut de Hautes études Internationales et du Développement. In 2009, CERIS broadened its offerings and started a Masters program in International Development.
Education
CERIS offers two master's degrees, a Master of Arts in International Politics and a Master of Arts in Development, as well as post graduate certificates. Both its degree programs are taught partly in English and partly French. Rather than the typical class format, CERIS consists of a series of guest lecturers come and give lectures on their area of expertise. The lectures are supplemented with readings, essays, and a residential seminar. Graduation at CERIS requires a Masters thesis and the passing of a cumulative oral exam at the end of studies. CERIS has strategic partnerships with the [Collège des études Interdisciplinaires de l'Université Paris Sud-11|Paris-Sud_11_University] and the Institut de Hautes études Internationales et du Développement in Genève, Switzerland. As CERIS is not only an institute of higher learning, but also a research institution, CERIS publishes its own trade journal covering key topics in international politics.
Student body profile
Due to its location in the capital of Europe, the majority of CERIS students are Brussels based diplomats, EU or Nato officials, corporate executives and journalists. Two third of the student base are from European Union member states or applicants countries, with the third coming from north and South America, Sub-Sahara Africa, South and East Asia. The average age of those attending courses lies at around 32. Two thirds of them are aged between 25 and 34, but more than a quarter are over the age of 35. Approximately 50% of CERIS students studied politics, economics, or business administration in their undergrad studies.
