Châtillon, Belgium
Châtillon (Tchekion in Gaume) is a section of the Belgian town of Saint-Léger, located in Wallonia municipality in the province of Luxembourg of Belgium
It was a separate municipality before the merger of Commons in 1977.
The village is crossed by the National Road 82 between Arlon and Virton.
Car Cemetery
In a nearby, small forest is a well known vehicle cemetery.[1] The legends say that this graveyard of cars was started when US servicemen, stationed in the area following World War Two, hid their cars in the forest due to the cost of shipping them overseas. Plans to retrieve the vintage vehicles at a later date were never realised, and the cars steadily deteriorated as the decades passed. Left to the mercy of the elements, souvenir hunters and enthusiasts on the lookout for spares, their rusting shells gradually became part of the forest.
Over the years, more cars have been added to the corroding collection, explaining why many of these vehicles don’t actually fit the wartime story. An article by Ronan Glon suggests a reason for these later additions, and in fact an alternative reason for the appearance of the cars in the first place.[2]
According to the information from locals, the car cemetery has been closed in the past years due to concerns about environmental issues.
