The Chapel of the Madeleine is located in the town of Malestroit in the Morbihan.[1]
History
ruins of the chapel are the subject of a registration as a Monument historique since December 20, 1934.[1]
The chapel went through a terrible and bloody battle within its walls. A group of Chouans was massacred there. The violence of the fighting is described in the paintings of Alexander Bloch.
Description
These ruins are of an ancient leper hospital, which became in 1129 the priory of the abbey of Marmoutier. In 1343, the plenipotentiaries of Philip VI of Valois and Edward III of England signed the famous truce of Malestroit. The chapel became disused in 1870. Its remarkable stained glass windows, depicting the legend of Saint Magdalene, were bought by Emile Zola and later sold to an American museum. The Bell-gable fortified steeple is the oldest in the department.
