Education

The university offers curricula fully adapted to the EU Bologna Process. It is well known for the quality of academic research, its international orientation and its higher than average study workload.[15] It offers bilingual degrees,[16] taught both in English and Spanish, in Economics, Business, Actuaries and Finance, and Computer, Industrial, biomedical engineering and Telecommunications engineering. It also offers joint degrees in Economics and Law and in Business and Law. All students, regardless of their concentration, must fulfill a Humanities requirement, and elementary fluency in a foreign language, generally English but also German, French or Italian, is also required.

Online courses

In addition to their regular classes, the university offers MOOCs on both the edX and Miríada X platform. Currently, they provide 13[17] MOOCs on subjects ranging from structural mechanics to public procurement and European paintings. The courses are taught in both English and Spanish and take, on average, 2 months to complete. A digital statement of accomplishment is then issued if the student has received the passing grade or more.

Financing of the university

The public universities in Spain[18] represent a very large expense for the Spanish population, in special, for the ones that are in the position of being taxpayers.

Almost 80% of the funding of the public universities is borne by the taxpayers. The students pay more or less 20% of this funding.

For understanding the percentages, they are divided into three types:

Student’s payoffs (20%)

Public subsidy (75%)

Other income (5%)

The universities do not monitor the money. They give all the student´s taxes to the government and then the government administrates all the incomes.

We stressed the importance of public universities when looking at unemployment rates and the global scientific production. Also very important is the role of universities percentage per population, very low compared to other countries.

Financing projects

The UC3M uses the crowd funding system to finance its projects.

The process has four main steps:[19]

Firstly a scientist, student or an alumnus develop an idea about researching, innovation and diffusion of knowledge. Secondly they spread this idea by Gotero.org, which is site where donors can endorse a lot of projects that are being published in the webpage. Thirdly someone who likes the project puts money in it. Finally, the projects reach the enough funding, publicizing and improvements to become a reality.

There are different types of crowd funding.

-Rewards-based crowd funding is when a sponsor puts money in the project and in exchange he/she always received a reward, generally some products or services.

-Equity crowd funding is a kind of crowd funding where a sponsor puts money in the project and receives rewards in form of equity for it.

-Debt-based is a kind of crowd funding where the sponsor lends money to the projects, so it has to return the same quantity plus interests to the lender.

-Donation-based crowd funding: is a type of crowd funding where the sponsor is a donor because he/she invests in the project only because he/she like it, not looking for rewards.

The crowd funding has given a great opportunity to a lot of people for developing his projects. In the UC3M, Isabel García Gutiérrez,[20] who is the vice rector of entrepreneurship and science park, said that they have started this system in the university because they thought crowd funding could be interesting for the university community and also she said that they have used the experience of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia which has already been using the crowd funding system.

Also the students find the crowd funding very useful, an example of it is the experience of Dania Olmos who is a researcher in the UC3M and also a member of the Prevention of Illnesses team. She said that at the beginning they knew about crowd funding of projects, but they had no experience and at the end they got enough funding for developing their project.

Financing cultural, sports and volunteerism

The UC3M as all the public universities received funds from the government so his students don’t have to pay all the expenses, only a small part.

But the extra activities such as cultural, sports and volunteerism activities aren’t included in the enrollment and have to be paid like a plus by the interested student. An example of this kind of activities is a cross that was celebrated the last year and had a cost of €5 for runner.

UC3M foundation

The founding of the uc3m is a private organization that has no profitable ideas. It was created in 1990 and its objectives are the promotion and financing of social, cultural and scientific activities.[21]

Tasks of the uc3m foundation:

College extension:

-courses for seniors (cultural program and classroom continuing education)

-Seminars on Exchange and financial markets: specific character in finance to train on a very important topic today and recognition of academic credits.

You click course: Directed both for Young people who want to enter the labor market as professionals who wants to increase knowledge about social media, networking, communication and digital characters.

Language Center: Focus on the developing of knowledge in different languages like English, French, German, Chinese, Italian and others. Presented the opportunity for students to motivate and teach them languages. Using new technologies and helping in the different languages exams.

Guidance and employment (SOPP): Big platform focus on giving facilities to students and companies to take advantage in the future contracting of students in order to gain experience and have first look at the labour market.

Dormitories and accommodation: Mainly to provide facilities for offering accommodation to students and university faculty. Three big facilities, two in Getafe (Gregorio Peces-Barba and Fernando de los Ríos dormitories) and one in Leganés (Fernando Abril Matorell). All of them quite close to the university. Increasingly the amount of foreign students and from other cities of Spain provokes having these big and qualified facilities.

Publications and reports: Study and analyze the impacts in today´s world of the different degrees offered by the university.

Social Commitment: Primarily intended to financially assist students with good record, disabled and low-income students. Also include the importance of donations of computer equipment to various NGOs, recycling and positive synergies with other similar organizations.

Really important to talk about the role that companies have to collaborate with the foundation of different ways, from financial donation to finance projects and sponsorship to contribute to the development of this institution.
