Chris Mattmann is a Principal Data Scientist and the Chief Architect in the Instrument and Data Systems section, at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California.[1] He is Treasurer in Board of Directors, Apache Software Foundation.[2] He is also Director of the Information Retrieval and Data Science Group (IRDS)[3] and Adjunct Associate Professor in the Computer Science Department within University of Southern California's Viterbi School of Engineering.[4]
He co-invented software framework for content detection and analysis Apache Tika with Jérôme Charron, and later wrote a book about it named Tika in Action[5] with Jukka Zitting, which is published by Manning Publications.
Chris was also one of the principal developers of the Object Oriented Data Technology platform and first VP of the project when it was donated to the Apache Software Foundation from NASA JPL in 2011.[6][7]
Dr Mattmann's work has also been utilised for a number of space missions including, Orbiting Carbon Observatory 1/2, NPP Sounder PEATE, and the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) Earth science missions.[8]
More recently, his work has focussed on Dark Web and automated data processing technologies and has been working with DARPA and NASA JPL on the Memex project which involves data discovery and dissemination from the Dark Web.[9][10]
