The Chuvash Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (Chuvash: Чăваш Автономлă Совет Социаллă Республики, Chăwash Avtonomlă Sovet Sociallă Respubliki; Russian: Чувашская Автономная Советская Социалистическая Республик, Chuvashskaya Avtonomnaya Sovetskaya Sotsialisticheskaya Respublik) was an Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic within the Soviet Union.
It occupied about 18,000 square kilometres (6,900 square miles) along the east bank of the Volga River, about 60 kilometres (37 miles) west of the river's confluence with the Kama River and some 700 kilometres (430 miles) east of Moscow. The Chuvash ASSR was formed in 1925 and declared its sovereignty within the Soviet Union in 1990. The primary economic activities are agricultural; grain and fruit production and logging are emphasized. The capital city was Cheboksary.
