Clare Eames (August 5, 1894 - November 8, 1930) was an influential Broadway actress, stage director and the wife of playwright Sidney Howard. Eames after World War I was, along with Jeanne Eagels, considered one of the leading new female lights of the Broadway stage performing in many classic roles including Shakespeare, Henrik Ibsen and George Bernard Shaw. She made a handful of silent pictures, but died before given the opportunity to appear in the new media of sound films. She was only 36, and left behind her husband, Sidney Howard, and small daughter Clare, later known as Jennifer Howard.[1][2][3]
Eames was born in Hartord, Connecticut, the daughter of Clare (Hamilton) and Hayden Eames.[4] Her maternal grandfather was Maryland Governor and Senator William Thomas Hamilton.[5] Her aunt was American soprano Emma Eames. She died in London, England.
