Clifford Gundle is a South African philanthropist, entrepreneur and investor, and founder of gundle plastics, one of the largest flexible film plastics manufacturers in the southern hemisphere.[1]
Career
In 1964 he opened Gundle Plastics producing 6 foot wide low density polythene sheeting for the packaging industry. In 1984 he sold gundle manufacturing systems, but retained his share in gundle lining systems which he founded in 1981,[2] which was renamed Aquatan.[3] Growth of the company exploded after government regulations in South Africa required double lining. He sold the company in 1986 for the sum of $32.5 million.[4]
Aurum Investments, his next venture, was set up with his son Kevin Gundle,[5] a hedge fund management company which successfully launched its first fund, Aurum ISIS in 1994.[6][7] Clifford Gundle now runs his family empire which includes manufacturing, investment-management and technology concerns around the world. Some of his more notable investments have been Citywire, which his son is now a director of.[8]
Philanthropy
Gundle has made many notable charitable donations including:
- Patronage of the London Jewish Cultural Center.[9]
- Patronage of the National Theater.[10]
- Patronage of the Cameri Theater Tel Aviv.[11]
- Charitable support of the V&A museum.[12]
- Endowment of the Courtauld Institute of Art.[13]
- Deans council at the Harvard Kennedy Business School.[14]
- Donation for the British ORT.[15]
Clifford Gundle also made a donation of £1,750 in 2007 to Michael Gove.[16]
Personal life
Clifford gundle is married to his wife, Sooozee Gundle with whom he has had 4 children.[3][17]
