Copper Square
Copper Square, the 90-block core of downtown Phoenix, is the business, cultural and governmental heart of the city. It comprises the original Phoenix historic town site. Copper Square’s boundaries extend from Fillmore to south of Jackson Street, 7th Street to 3rd Avenue. Recent and planned revitalizations in Copper Square, including more than $4 billion in public and private sector development, increased arts, cultural and entertainment activity, and the presence of two state universities are resulting in significant physical and economic growth for the greater Phoenix area. In 2010, business interests have begun referring to the area by the name "Downtown Phoenix".

- Arizona State University's Downtown Phoenix campus enrolls over 11,500 students, with buildings located in several blocks bounded by 1st Avenue (on the west), 3rd Street (on the east), Fillmore St. (on the north) and Polk St. (on the south). Additional classroom and office space is located at the ASU Mercado complex at Van Buren and 5th St.
- The University of Arizona College of Medicine - Phoenix, a 4-year medical school, is located on the Phoenix Biomedical Campus, occupying three of the historic Phoenix Union High School buildings, and the newly built Health Sciences Education Building at Van Buren between 5th and 7th streets. A new 10-story research tower operated by University of Arizona is also under construction.
