Danielle Anderson (born January 24, 1986), known by her stage name Danielle Ate the Sandwich, is a singer-songwriter from Grant, Nebraska.
Anderson has released five independent albums starting with her self-titled album; Danielle Ate the Sandwich released in 2007, followed by her second album Things People Do (2009), Two Bedroom Apartment (2010), Like a King (2012), and her latest work The Drawing Back of Curtains music from the documentary film Packed in a Trunk: The Lost Art of Edith Lake Wilkinson (2015).
Early life
Danielle Anderson was raised in Fremont, Nebraska, then moved at the end of middle school to Littleton, Colorado and graduated from Arapahoe High School in 2004. Born into a musical family, Anderson learned to play the piano, the clarinet, and the saxophone in elementary school and the violin in high school. Danielle also sang in the choir and would write her own songs, but she didn't start singing them publicly until college.[1]
After high school, Danielle studied apparel and design at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. Danielle graduated in 2008 and continued to live in Fort Collins until 2012 with the exception of the four months Anderson spent in New York as a fashion intern to complete her degree.
After receiving her degree, Danielle worked as a seamstress at an alteration shop and sold handmade handbags and clothes. At that time Anderson considered music a hobby playing music with a group of friends under the name Backdraft: the Musical. After the group parted ways Danielle decided to go solo creating her stage name Danielle Ate the Sandwich, that she came up with after posting music on her MySpace page.
Career
During college, Danielle played open mic nights for over a year and began to record her first CD which she self-recorded and produced, her self-titled “Danielle Ate the Sandwich”.
In 2007, Anderson began posting videos of her own songs as well as cover songs on YouTube.[2] Danielle stood out from the rest of the young people trying to show-case their talents on the internet because she played a majority of her songs with a ukulele and provided a funny skit before a lot of her videos.
Danielle's popularity on YouTube was growing as she graduated from college and at the end of 2008, Danielle was asked to play a show in NYC for a music showcase at Pianos Bar in Manhattan.
Before Danielle left for NYC in December 2008, her YouTube video of "Conversations with Dead People",[3] a song from her first album, was featured on YouTube's homepage. Danielle Ate the Sandwich gained thousands of views in a few short days and hundreds of new subscribers.
In 2009, Danielle became a full-time singer songwriter and began touring nationally.[4]
The week Danielle's album Two Bedroom Apartment was released in July 2010, it reached #5 on the iTunes top selling singer/songwriter charts.[5]
Danielle Ate the Sandwich opened for Mumford and Sons on an episode of ETown in October 2010.[6]
In March 2012, Danielle set out to raise six thousand dollars through KickStarter to fund her album Like a King. Anderson reached her goal in one day and by the end of the month had raised over sixteen thousand dollars.[7] She is currently based out of Loveland, Colorado.[8]
Danielle's primary instruments are a tenor and a baritone ukulele, both made by Mya-Moe Ukuleles.[9]
Danielle was featured on the cover of the Fall 2013 issue of Ukulele.
