Dr Daryl Ng Win Kong, JP (黃永光), born in 1978, is the eldest son of Robert Ng, Chairman of Sino Group. He holds Singaporean citizenship and joined the mandatory military service in Singapore; at the same time, he talks passionately about his Hong Kong root and childhood spent in Hong Kong, reminding that he was born at Queen Mary Hospital and attended Diocesan Boys' School in his youth. He later studied in the United States, where he graduated from Columbia University in 2001, and after two years as a project manager at Sino Group was appointed executive director in 2005.
Career and Philanthropy
Since 2007 he has taken a more public role, first appearing at a land auction with his father in October that year, and in recent years he takes up increasing public services. He advocates sustainability and heritage, championing green innovations like city air purification system,[1][2][3][4] in-building hydro power system,[5][6] food waste management,[7] Tai O Heritage Hotel in Hong Kong[8] and The Fullerton Heritage in Singapore. Other sustainability programmes include Sino Junior Reporter Programme in collaboration with South China Morning Post and Go Code project in partnership with the City University of Hong Kong and First Code Academy to give children from underprivileged families exposure to computer coding and app writing.[9] Both programmes provide the younger generation with training in essential skills like English writing and computer coding. The innovations, such as the city air purification system, have gained traction in Hong Kong and Beijing,[10] including receiving the second prize of the Local Industry Practitioners category of the CIC Innovation Awards 2015.
Daryl Ng sits on the judging panel of the SCMP Spirit of Hong Kong Awards,[11] an award that pays tribute to the unsung heroes of Hong Kong. In recognition of his commitment to heritage conservation and sustainable development, the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) Hong Kong conferred on him an honorary doctorate degree in 2015, the Open University of Hong Kong conferred on him an Honorary Fellowship in 2016.[12] He was also appointed a member of the Council of the University of Hong Kong in 2015 and a member of the Board of the M Plus Museum in 2016.
In addition to Sino Group, Daryl Ng serves on the board of a number of organisations, including Blue Cross (Asia-Pacific) Insurance of Hong Kong and The Bank of East Asia Limited. He is taking up increasing public services, including serving on the General Committee of the Chamber of Hong Kong Listed Companies, the International Advisory Council of Columbia University, the Tenth Sichuan Committee of Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference ('CPPCC'), the Twelfth Beijing Committee of CPPCC, the tenth and eleventh Committees of the All-China Youth Federation, the Chongqing Youth Federation, The Community Chest of Hong Kong and the Real Estate Developers Association of Hong Kong.[13]
