Data Collective
Data Collective (DCVC) is a venture capital fund based in San Francisco that invests in entrepreneurs who build Big Data companies. As of 2016, it has raised $265M in funds.[1][2]
History
It was founded in 2011 by Matt Ocko and Zack Bogue. Its team includes 35 equity partners.[3]
It invests in the infrastructure level (the storage, security, and management systems), analytics and the top layer (vertical-focused apps in areas like lending, travel, customer service, medical research and more).[1]
It raised its first fund in 2011 (where some of its investments included Metamarkets, Contendo (acquired by Akamai), SocialCam and Kenshoo). It invested in its second fund in 2012, when it invested in limited partners (LPs).[1]
In March 2014, it raised $125 million for its third fund.[1]
In December 2014, it raised $125 million for its “opportunity fund,” which focuses exclusively on later-stage rounds for existing investments.[4][5]

Investments
Its investments include Uber, Ayasdi, Transcriptic, Prism Skylabs, Planet Labs, LiftIgniter,[6] Ranker, Gradle Inc.,[2] Sequence Bio,[7] Tradeshift,[8] and Priceonomics.[1]
Philosophy
Its philosophy is for its technically-inclined investors to take a vertical look at its server architecture and code, and evaluate the risk associated with backing the technology.[1] It also uses its insider knowledge to invest in early-stage startups (preferring to invest before the big players) that can prove their new technology that the market suddenly opens up to.[9]
