Early life
David was born and raised in Mexico City. His very first memory is looking out his window and seeing a building collapse during an earthquake in 1985. Ever since, he’s been able to see the beauty in chaos.[1] After studying computer science at the Mexican National Polytech and earning a B.A. in Classic Literature from the City University of New York, David continued on to receive a Master of Fine Arts in Film from Columbia University. There he met fellow students Mauro Mueller, Mark Raso, and Mauricio Leiva-Cock, who would eventually become his co-owners of an independent production company, Fidelio Films.
Awards
David’s first short film, Ratitas, premiered at the Morelia International Film Festival and went on to win the award for best short film in the Brooklyn Film Festival, best Mexican short in the Monterrey International Film Festival, and Best Actor for Kristyan Ferrer Short Shorts Film Festival Mexico (SSFFM) [2]
In 2013 David’s short fiction film, Perfidia, won the Latino category from the Directors Guild of America, and was part of the Official Selection of the 12th Morelia Film Festival. In addition, it has won several awards and grants including the Best Short Film at the Guanajuato International Film Festival (GIFF), and funding from the Jerome Foundation New York Film and Video grant. His film also participated in the San Sebastián International Film Festival, Spain; the Kustendorf International Film and Music Festival, Serbia; and the New Orleans Film Festival (NOFF), Louisiana, among others.
Fidelio Films
David Figueroa García is founding member of the production company Fidelio Films,[3] a New York City-based independent film production company along with producers Mauricio Leiva-Cock, Mark Raso and Mauro Mueller. All four of them met while studying at the MFA program in directing and screenwriting at Columbia University. The company has produced a number of acclaimed short films, winning twice in a row in the Student Academy Awards with Under in 2012[4] and A World for Raúl in 2013.[5] In 2014, for the third time in a row, they had a short "Perfidia" in the regional final of the Student Academy Awards. Their first feature film Copenhagen, featuring Gethin Anthony, Bodil Awards winner Frederikke Dahl Hansen, Sebastian Armesto, Mille Dinesen, Baard Owe, and Tamzin Merchant[6] was theatrically released in North America in 2014.
