David Lloyd (chemist)

Professor David Lloyd is an Irish chemist, Vice Chancellor and President of the University of South Australia and a member of South Australia's Economic Development Board.[1]

Career

After graduating from Dublin City University and completing post-doctoral training in Trinity College in Dublin, Lloyd worked in the pharmaceutical industry for De Novo Pharmaceuticals in Cambridge. He moved back to Ireland and into academia in TCD in 2004 as the Hitachi Lecturer in Advanced Computing,[2] before going on to hold positions of Vice-president for Research, Bursar and Director of Strategic Innovation at Trinity College. He became a specialist in computer-aided drug design and developed expertise in the commercialisation and patenting of research originating within the Molecular Design Group at Trinity. Lloyd was Dean and Vice President of Research there from 2007 until 2011.[3] Lloyd also chaired the Irish Research Council.

In 2012, Lloyd migrated to Adelaide with his young family and commenced in the position of Vice Chancellor and President of the University of South Australia in 2013.[2][4]

Lloyd was appointed to the Economic Development Board of South Australia in 2014 and was also appointed Chair of the Australian Technology Network group of technology-focused universities. In 2015, his contract at the University of South Australia was extended until 2022 and the announcement was applauded by past Chancellor, Dr Ian Gould.[4] The Advertiser reported in 2015 that Lloyd was a moderate on deregulation, planned on doubling the university's intake of international students and was opposed to merging South Australia's universities. It also reported that he "bemoaned Australia’s fixation on mineral wealth and lack of value-adding production".[5]

Lloyd has a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Applied Chemistry and a PhD in Medicinal Organic Chemistry from Dublin City University. He additionally holds an MA (j.o.) from Trinity College Dublin, an honorary Professorship from Tianjin University and an Honorary Doctorate from Sir Terry Pratchett's fictional Unseen University. David Lloyd was counted among the friends of Terry Pratchett's and was inducted to the Venerable Order of the Honeybee at Pratchett's public memorial service in 2016. Lloyd is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry.[1]

Remuneration controversy

Lloyd's remuneration became a controversial subject in 2015. His salary was in the $540,000-$550,000 bracket in 2013 and increased to the $810,000-$820,000 bracket in 2014. The pay rise took him from a position as one of the lowest paid university leaders in Australia to a position "just outside the top 20" according to The Advertiser.[5]
