Deal Casino is an American four-member pop-rock band from Sparta, New Jersey, that moved to Asbury Park, New Jersey in 2014.[1]
The band was originally called Something About January.[2][3] The band renamed itself after the well-known Jersey beach club, The Deal Casino Beach Club, after an episode in which they waited for hours there in preparation for the 2013 Bamboozle Music Festival.[1][2][2] The Deal Casino gets its name from an infamous shore town whose residents include people like movie theater magnate Walter Reade and Genovese crime family underboss Willie Moretti.[4] Deal Casino has averaged a show a week since their formation in 2013.[1]
Joe Parella, the band's front man, provides lead vocals and plays guitar. The rest of the band consists of Jozii Cowell (guitar), Jon Rodney (guitar), Christopher Donofrio (drums).[1] All are from Sparta, NJ, and were barely 20 years old when they formed the band. All decided to move to live and work in the heart of the Asbury Park music scene. Joe Parella works at the recording studio where they practice and the others work in restaurants/florists.[1] Deal Casino played The Saint for 12 weeks in the Summer of 2014 during their initiation to the Asbury Park, New Jersey music scene. The shows were recorded, and the band reported watching them the next day, taking notes, analyzing them, and planning their improvement like a sports team.[1] By December 2014, Deal Casino dominated the Asbury Park Music Awards, drawing comparisons with early Smashing Pumpkins and winning more awards than any other group, including Best Pop/Rock Band, Best Vocalist, and Best Live Performance.[5]
The band's sound has been described as "urgent, groove-heavy" and a "boisterous, bouncing rock sound not so far from Neon Trees or Young the Giant,"[6] though some object to this characterization.[4] Parella's style has been described as similar to Trees vocalist Tyler Glenn. They have kept the sound very raw to achieve a "live," stark, but polished sound.[1][4] Their early sound was characterized by contrasts between subdued, mellow, and loud, anthem-like sounds.[2] Their lyrics have been described as raw, confessional, and picturesque, similar to those of Arcade Fire and Klaxons.[4] Deal Casino has been described as "an explosive live act, ramping up and tearing around the stage as if possessed."[4]

Discography
- Cocaine Love (2013). Cocaine Love is their first EP. It is said to contain the same gripping continuity as the The Runaways EP. Songs are characterized by a mix of 1990s, Blink-182 angst and nostalgic, 1980s vibe similar to bands like The Cure.[4] Cocaine Love was recorded by Erik Kase Romero and produced by Jon Leidersdorf of Lake House Recording Studios in Asbury Park.[4]
- The Runaways (2013). The Runaways is the band’s second EP and reflects the influences of Coldplay and Kings of Leon,[2] the latter of which also played The Saint early in its career.[7] It was recorded by Erik Kase Romero and produced by Jon Leidersdorf of Lake House Recording Studios in Asbury Park.[4]
- Heck (2014). Heck was named after Heck Street in Asbury Park, and reflects their buoyant stage performance style at that time. Their goal was to achieve a "live" show sound.[1]
- Nika (2015). The process of recording Nika the band made an effort to replicate a live sound as well as sounds of the past by tracking live to tape and taking a minimalistic approach.[6]
